007, 008 & 009

I have been watching Chuck lately, and I was thinking about the idea of the intersect holding all the secrets of a country - I wondered where my secrets would be kept... maybe my bin? This collage is made from clippings of stuff in my bin before recycling day.


I cleaned up my desk (finally) and these are the stack of books awaiting me to file through and quote the crap out of them for my essays. Yes twilight is in there (embarrassingly) - I'm writing an essay about Vampires!!


All my assignments are due next week this is where I wish my head could be but I don't have time!

Day 003

So I spent today frequenting the Art Gallery of WA and PICA today for Uni. Got overwhelmed by the nerdiness of PICA's Love of Diagrams exhibition, it seems yesterday's project was a bit of creepy foreshadowing!

There is a plethora of Indigenous art on show at the moment at AGWA - it's Indigenous Art Awards time! And there was a piece in there which did a much more complex version of my project today - hidden dot messages like the colour-blind tests. The artist had used amazing colours and hidden words in there with an actual profound message. Mine is not profound at all.

Hi, my name is Molly and I'm an IKEA catalogue addict.

It's been 12 hours since i flipped through one, marvelling at the minimalist design prowess of the northern Europeans. Their bold colours, their light perfectly sanded wood, their allen-key construction methods.
It seemed appropriate that I began my creative diary with my current obsession - Detournement of tourist postcards and IKEA catalogue images. I started it with my Uni project made up of an original 9 postcards - I had received them in swaps, and was slightly unsure of what to do with them as it would be a bit odd to receive an Alcatraz postcard from Perth Western Australia.










I continued it the other day for the "altered ad card swap" on swapbot:



I enjoy this contrast of these two groups of objects. IKEA's very engineered/designed products that we use as consumers to assert our individuality (which is slightly ironic) or belonging to a certain group of society and create our 'home' with - they define or build our 'own' space within this world - our sanctury. Versus the ideal/famous images created to sell a location - Miami beach, the infamous Alcatraz island, the best aspects of a place - why you would want to visit. These are very public images linked with the identity of a place that nobody owns as such.
I also love the crazy scale weirdness you get to play with!

So anyway that was day 1 on my adventure!

Hello my name is Molly and I'm a Post addict.

So for my Beauty tutorial in this second week of the most fantastically awesome Bachelor of Arts course I had to bring in an Item I thought was beautiful and argue why.
Cue lugging in my PC collection! I got a couple of laughs with my Intro... and people seemed genuinely interested in where my cards had come from, which was cool.
It did make me realise that I have been neglecting my blogging for almost another month, but I have been having such a ball at Uni, I almost don't have time! Totally totally happy with my decision, even if there are some little feelings of "am I good enough to be here" sometimes....

Well maybe I'll be a Artist...?

So this week has been epic exciting!
Tuesday I received an email from Curtin regarding my interview for course switching to art, it is scheduled for Wednesday and I promptly got really really worried!
That evening I Finished my 6-week drawing class with the adorable Elizabeth at the Fremantle Arts Centre. We had the coolest life model, she was joking and singing all night! It was a great way to finish off. I had a opportunity to chat with Elizabeth afterwards about what to put in my folio to show off at the interview, and she was very encouraging about my work (Massive ego boost!).
I sent out most of my packages for before I leave to Europe, and am starting to realise that it might be a good idea to pull out my suitcase and see what will fit. But I do have my International Drivers License, so I can now LEGALLY drive in any country in the world!
And my letterbox has been getting a bit of a workout with some swaps beginning to filter in... So many from super cool places, check it out!

Wednesday 7/Apr

Today I made the decision as to what i will be doing at Uni next semester... a major in the Bachelor of Arts area at Curtin called Visual Culture. It mixes practical art units with the theory side of things... and leaves me electives to do other interesting bits and pieces. I am really excited that after making the choice not to go back to nursing almost a year ago, I finally have a direction that I am heading in!

The only thing is i now need to get a folio together and do an interview, which is a bit nerve-wracking!

Wednesday 17/Mar

Today I finished my last sewing class and talked with Angela about the needs for a portfolio to got into arty courses at uni. She encouraged me to do more classes like to ones at Fremantle Arts Centre, and to do LOTS of drawing, and picture taking etc. Exciting, but still each time I look at a blank journal page... I never want to disturb it.
